Merrow

A suburb in north-east Guildford on the edge of the North Downs, built around an old village with a 12th-century church.

Merrow is a suburb in the north-east of Guildford, about 2 miles from the town centre, on the edge of the ridge of hills that forms the North Downs.

The old village

The village grew up around a crossroads, where the A25 between Guildford and Leatherhead crosses the original Merrow Street road from Burpham to Dorking. The oldest houses still stand along these two roads, together with St John the Evangelist church, which dates from the mid 12th century, and the Horse and Groom, a Grade II listed 17th-century coaching inn next door.

How it grew

Merrow stayed a small settlement until the 1950s, when the Bushy Hill estate was built. The Merrow Park development followed in the mid-1980s and has its own shops, school and doctor's surgery.
